Iron and metal are everywhere. These materials are used for many applications from cookware to cars to the overpasses those cars travel under. Iron and metal are strong materials, but they have arch enemies...oxygen and moisture. When iron and metal meet their match, iron oxide, a.k.a. rust occurs.
Left untreated over time, rust can lead to structural damage and just make metal and iron look unappealing to some. Others like the look of the rust on a particular item. Since we sell many items manufactured from cast iron, we thought we'd pass on a few products to keep your decorative iron pieces rust-free (if you so desire) for years to come!
1) PENETROL® Oil-Based Coating Additive - Although its main use is as an additive to paint as a thinner to prevent brush strokes, this product also inhibits rust on metal surfaces. It drys clear despite being a light golden color out of the can. Drying time is approximately 24 hours.
2) Klean Strip Boiled Linseed Oil - Although recommended for wood, BLO has been used for years to stop rust on metal and iron. After letting it dry for 24-48 hours, it will coat the item with a thin soft coating. It can be a bit tacky so we would not advise using this on any item that has moving parts.
3) RUST-OLEUM Clear Enamel Spray Paint - Several factors may have you choosing this option over the others. Rust-Oleum offers this clear protectant in a few different finishes to suit your preference, such as matte, satin and glossy. It also dries to the touch in 15-30 minutes!
Please note that we do not advise the use of the products mentioned here for any items used to cook or consume food from. These ideas are strictly mentioned for the prevention of rust on decorative items or items not used for foodstuffs, such as lawn ornaments, tools, etc.
We highly recommend applying the product to an inconspicuous area prior to coating an entire piece to make sure it will provide the intended benefits and finish you desire. As always, follow the manufacturers instructions for use as well as the safety guidelines on the product labeling.
Enjoy the simple things in life.
